Resident Assignments

PGY ­1 Residents ­ Categorical Program

Inpatient ­ The PGY ­1 year consists of twelve (12) calendar month blocks which provide the resident with an introduction to sound principles of patient management in the inpatient setting. Each PGY-1 resident is assigned 6 ­7 months of general medicine inpatient wards. This includes 1 ­2 months of inpatient wards at South Fulton Medical Center. During this time each resident is responsible for 8-10 patients. During impatient wards call is every fifth night. Two months of ICU/CCU is also included with a maximum number of new patients set at five (5) and call every third night. The year is rounded out with one month of Ambulatory Care, and two sub-specialties: Rotations.

Outpatient ­ To develop and improve the ambulatory care skills of our residents a ½ day per week continuity clinic is assigned.

PGY-1 Residents ­ Preliminary Program

Residents in the PGY ­1 Preliminary Program are assigned six (6) months of general medical inpatient wards. The other six (6) months may include elective experiences in individual medical subspecialties, OB/GYN, general surgery, neurology, family medicine, ambulatory medicine, and medical ICU. Residents are also assigned to continuity clinic ½ day per week.

Typical Schedule for PGY ­ 2 Residents

Inpatient ­ The PGY ­2 year is designed to further increase the resident’s exposure to inpatient care as well as subspecialty: medicine. Thirteen (13) block rotations of four (4) weeks each form the backbone of scheduled assignments. Each PGY­2 resident is assigned three (3) months of general medicine inpatient wards at Grady Memorial Hospital. During this time each trainee is responsible for supervising two (2) PGY ­1 residents, 1 ­2 third-year MSM medical students, and a patient load of 16 ­20. Long call occurs Q5 as stated above. PGY­2’s also are assigned one (1) block at South Fulton Medical Center; one (1) block of ICU/CCU and one (1) block of Night Float. Subspecialty: rotations in Cardiology and Gastroenterology are also assigned.

Outpatient ­ The PGY ­ 2 year outpatient experience is an expansion of first year activities. The three­month Ambulatory Medicine Block rotation includes first contact patient experience in the Urgent Care Clinic and outpatient exposure to ENT, office orthopedics, GYN, ophthalmology, and medicine subspecialties. Residents are also assigned a one (1) block emergency medicine rotation. The one ½ days per week continuity clinic continues with the exception of the one month ICU and ECC rotations.

Typical Schedule for PGY­3 Residents

Inpatient ­ The PGY ­3 year broadens the resident’s exposure to inpatient care as well as subspecialty: medicine. The four-week thirteen (13) block rotations continue. Each PGY ­ resident is assigned three (3) blocks of general medicine inpatient wards at Grady Memorial Hospital and one (1) block of the South Fulton Medical Center. During their Grady ward rotations each resident is responsible for supervising 1 ­2 PGY ­1 residents, 1 ­2 third-year medical students, and 16­20 patients. Call is assigned no more frequently than every fifth night. One (1) block of ICU/CCU and a PGY-3 Night Float rotation are also assigned.

Outpatient ­ The PGY­3 year outpatient experience is an expansion of first and second year activities. Two (2) blocks of Ambulatory Medicine, one (1) block of dermatology, one (1) block of emergency medicine and one (1) block Geriatric experience at the Tuskegee VA are offered. Subspecialty: rotations in hematology/oncology and cardiology are also assigned. Other subspecialty: electives are also available. The one ½ day per week of continuity clinic continues.
